　　However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The faultfinder will find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor house. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the poor house as brightly as from the rich man's abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace. The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any. Maybe they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means, which should be more disreputable. Please cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn to the old, return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.
　　
　　不论你的生活如何卑贱，你要面对它，享受它，不要躲避它，更别用恶言咒骂它。它不像你那样坏。你在富甲天下的时候却最贫乏。吹毛求疵的人就是在天堂里也会挑毛病。你要爱你的生活，尽管它贫穷。即使生活在穷舍敝屋里，你也还有愉快、兴奋、光荣的时候。反射在寒舍的窗上的阳光和射在富户人家窗上的一样光亮；陋室门前的积雪同样在早春融化。我只看到，一个从容的人，在哪里都像在皇宫里一样，生活得心满意足并富有愉快的思想。我看城镇中的穷人往往过着最独立不羁的生活。也许因为他们很伟大，所以受之无愧。大多数人以为他们是超然的，不靠城镇来支援他们；可事实上为了维持生计，他们往往会采取有悖于诚信的手段，根本谈不上体面。像圣人一样视贫穷如园中之草耕植它吧!不要总是费心费神去获求新东西，无论是新衣服还是新朋友。回头去找旧的，回到原处去。万物不变，是我们在变。你可以卖掉你的衣服，但要保留你的思想。

　　不要隐讳自己的想法

　　The problem with hoarding is that you end up living off your reserves. Eventually you'll become stale.

　　If you give away everything you have, you are left with nothing. This forces you to look, to be aware, to replenish. Somehow the more you give away, the more comes back to you.

　　Ideas are open knowledge. Don't claim ownership.They're not your ideas anyway, they're someone else's. They are out there floating by on the ether. You just have to put yourself in a frame of mind to pick them up.

　　如果你把什么都讲出去，自己也就什么也剩不下了。这就迫使你去观察，去了解，去充实。从某种程度上讲，你放弃的越多得到的也越多。

　　想法是公开的知识，不必要求什么拥有权。想法根本不属于你，而是别人的，在天地间纵横。你只是必须把自己调整到要把这些想法抓住而已的心态。
